Recovery Fitness Tribe is a 501(3)(c) nonprofit organization dedicated to helping those in recovery stay clean and sober and prevent relapse. We are a tribe of warriors. Supporting one another, living a healthy fitness and wellness-oriented life. Through the principles of strengthening your mind, body, and soul, one can have a healthy balance in life.
Regular exercise has proven to improve mood and reduce negative emotions and thoughts. During exercise, you release endorphins, also known as "feel-good" hormones, such as dopamine and serotonin. They are both neurotransmitters that work together and sometimes against each other in the body. Dopamine is known for rewards and motivation. Dopamine is what is released during drug and alcohol use that give you that feel good feeling. Through exercise, you can obtain that same feeling of pleasure. Serotonin is known for happiness, focus, and calmness. Serotonin, while similar to dopamine, creates a long-lasting feeling of happiness and well-being. Because of the release of these hormones, stress, anxiety, and depression often associated with substance abuse recovery are greatly reduced.
Research has shown that physical activity is linked to improved cognitive function. Regular exercise can enhance memory, attention span, and decision-making skills, which are essential in staying focused on recovery goals. Furthermore, engaging in physical activity can increase self-discipline and self-control, crucial qualities needed to maintain sobriety.
Participating in fitness and wellness activities, joining a gym a yoga studio, or another fitness group, provides an opportunity to connect with others who are also on a recovery journey. The sense of camaraderie and support can be invaluable, cultivating healthy friendships and reducing feelings of isolation. Also, by the friendships you make, you can hold each other accountable and motivated, helping each other stay on track.
Engaging in physical activity has shown to have a very positive effect on an individual's physical health. It is known to improve cardiovascular health, strengthen the immune system, boost self-confidence, and help with weight management. The overall positive impact on physical health can benefit those in recovery tremendously. It helps restore balance to the body, which may have been compromised during periods of substance abuse.
Improving your mood and health, enhancing your cognitive function, getting back and engaging with the community in healthy activities, increasing your self-confidence, feeling proud in your accomplishments and pride in yourself, all help prevent relapse. With all of the benefits and working a traditional sobriety program, you greatly increase the chances of maintaining your sobriety!
